Whatever Situation (Day 8)
Reading: Philippians 4:11 ESV
‘Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.’
How can Paul say this from a prison cell?
How can we face our own uncertain terrain with equal confidence? How can we certify our trust in God whatever our difficulties?
I don’t think Paul is saying he has no personal needs – of course he does. He is in prison! Rather, I think he speaks of being undisturbed and completely sustained by Christ at the very point of his need. He not depending on himself nor anyone else.
The contentedness Paul talks about here reminds me of another verse I love that has made me baby content in the most distressing of times. It is a satisfaction in knowing God is in control that actively invites the peace of God into the situation.
Psalm 131:2 AMP
Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned child [resting] with his mother,
My soul is like a weaned child within me [composed and freed from discontent].
Encourage yourself to command the peace of God to come into whatever you face today. The Father has given you the authority in Jesus’ name to petition for peace for yourself or on another’s behalf. The psalmist talks about calming and composing himself. You can do this too, whatever your need, whatever your prison – you can invite the contentedness of God into your inner being where the Spirit dwells and it can remain right there until you come through your trial
